Why I Paid More for TE Connectivity on a Medical Device Project

Last March, I found myself staring at two quotes for 25,000 crimp pins and matching modular jacks. One was from TE Connectivity, at $18,200. The other was from a parts broker, at $13,700. My spreadsheet said the cheaper quote was the obvious choice. I'm glad I didn't listen to it.

The Backstory: A Medical Device Launch With No Room For Errors

I'm a procurement manager at a 45-person medical device company. For the past six years, I've managed our component sourcing budget—roughly $270,000 a year—and tracked every order in our procurement system. That habit came from getting burned too many times by quotes that looked good at first and then turned out to be missing something.

We were weeks away from launching a new patient monitor. The software was done, the clinical trials were done, and our contract manufacturer had already reserved production line time. Every additional week of delay would cost us roughly $12,000 in overhead, plus the risk of losing the hospital network order we had been promised.

My first instinct was to run through my standard due diligence: ask for lot traceability, certificate of conformity, and pull-test documentation. The broker was quick to respond when I asked about price. They were slow when I asked about paperwork.

The first red flag appeared after I sent a follow-up email: 'We can source that from TE Connectivity Tanger.' That sounded specific, but they couldn't produce a purchase order from TE or an authorized distributor. They kept saying 'standard gray-market sourcing,' which tells you they aren't going to guarantee the chain of custody.

The broker did send a PDF that looked official, but our engineer noticed the lot code format didn't match TE's numbering convention. When we asked for a sample pin, they stopped replying for two days. That silence was more informative than any sales pitch.

I called our senior engineer and asked if the documentation really mattered for such a small component. He gave me a patient explanation of how to crimp pins correctly: use the correct die, strip the wire to the right length, insert it fully into the pin, press through a complete crimp cycle, and then pull-test the result. It's tempting to think that when two suppliers quote the same TE part number, they're quoting the same product. But the same part in different hands isn't the same part. If I couldn't verify where the broker's stock came from, or how it had been stored, I was taking on risk without knowing it.

The most frustrating part was that the broker's fine print included a $1,400 expediting and handling fee that only showed up on page 4. So the real price difference was $18,200 before rush fees versus $15,100 for the broker. That's a $3,100 gap, not the $4,500 I originally saw. It also meant the broker understood the urgency, and their fee was their way of saying the delivery date wasn't negotiable on their side, either.

Why I Paid the Rush Fee Anyway

I had to decide within 72 hours. The upside of the lower quote was about $3,100 in immediate savings. The risk was missing our production slot, triggering a penalty from the contract manufacturer, and delaying the hospital network order that was waiting for us. If that happened, the total cost would be far above any savings. I kept asking myself: is $3,100 worth potentially losing a $150,000 contract?

It wasn't.

I called our TE Connectivity rep and explained the situation. She didn't try to upsell me; she just showed me the actual lead time with their regular freight and with air freight, and then quoted the priority fee. The fee added about $1,900 to TE's $18,200 order, and that included the traceability package plus a confirmed delivery date.

Here's how I think about that decision now. According to IPC/WHMA-A-620, crimped connections must meet the pull-test requirements for the wire gauge and application class. Without documented pull testing, a crimp joint is considered non-conforming. That's not a preference; it's a standard. TE's documentation package gave us the evidence we needed to satisfy our own QA, our ISO 13485 auditor, and the hospital's quality team.

So I signed the order. $20,100—well, $19,900 plus freight, let me be precise. The invoice came in at $20,100 total, which was about $5,000 more than the broker's fine print quote. But what I bought was certainty.

What This Taught Me About Cost and Certainty

The parts arrived in 3.5 weeks, as confirmed. Our contract manufacturer pulled samples from every lot, checked crimp height and pull force, and all 300 samples passed. The patient monitor went into production in May, and the first hospital shipment left in June. No field failures, no audit findings, no nights lost to panic.

People assume the lowest quote means the vendor is more efficient. What they don't see is which costs are hidden or deferred. In this case, the hidden costs were the documentation gaps, the unverified Tangier source, and the probability of a quality finding. The deferred costs would have been even worse: a recall, a redesign, or damage to our reputation.

This experience didn't make me less price-sensitive. It made me more precise about what a saving actually is. I'm still the person who challenges every invoice. My spreadsheet still tracks every dollar. But now it also tracks delivery certainty and documentation quality. When a deadline is fixed and the consequences of failure are high, I'm willing to pay a premium for guaranteed delivery. That's not being wasteful. It's being realistic about how cost is calculated.

There's something satisfying about a perfectly executed rush order—the stress, the coordination, and the quiet moment when the final units pass inspection. The best part is knowing that we didn't just save a few dollars; we protected a launch that mattered to real patients.
