Every quarter, I get the same conversation from one of our engineers: "Why are we paying this much for a connector when I can find something that looks identical for a third of the price?"
I'm not an electrical engineer, so I can't speak to every spec detail. What I can tell you, from a purchasing perspective, is what those "cheaper" parts actually cost us over time.

How to Use a Multimeter for Screening (and Why It's Not Enough)
If you buy electronic components in any volume, I recommend learning how to use a multimeter for basic screening. You don't need an engineering degree to check continuity or measure coil resistance. On that 2780 relay, the coil should read within a published resistance range. A reading near zero or infinite means the part is suspect. We caught eleven bad relays in about an hour.
But here's the limit of that approach. This gets into proper electrical testing territory, which isn't my expertise—I'd recommend consulting an application engineer if you're qualifying a new component. A multimeter catches gross failures, but it won't catch a connector with substandard plating that looks fine for three months and then fails in the field. - Spare parts that will likely never be installed
But for production components—anything that goes into a product you ship, a system you install, or equipment people rely on—I've stopped gambling. My advice: run the numbers on your next three orders. Price the authorized route, including shipping and support. Then price the alternative, plus the cost of incoming inspection, plus the probability of a failure and what that failure would cost. If the math still says the gray-market part is worth it, that's a decision made with your eyes open. My numbers say otherwise—and I have the spreadsheet to prove it.
